Today God says:
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue".
He promises me:
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and those who love it shall eat the fruit thereof". (Prov. 18:21)
My response to the word:
I will remember the power of my words throughout this day, and I will use my words sparingly and carefully. I want to speak truth at all times. I want my words to have life and minister grace to those who hear them. I know the truth of Jesus words, "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks". Like the Psalmist, I want my mouth to speak wisdom and my heart to be full of understanding.
My prayer:
Heavenly Father, help me to speak words of life to myself and others. "May the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer".
Today's scriptures:
"My mouth will speak wise sayings, the insights I have carefully considered". (Ps 49:3 GW) "Your mouth says what comes from inside you". (Matt. 12:34 GW) "Don't say anything that would hurt another person. Instead speak only what is good so that you can give help wherever it is needed". (Eph. 4:29 GW) "A large forest can be set on fire by a little flame. The tongue is that kind of flame". (James 2:5,6 GW)
Quote for today:
You cannot stop people's tongues, and therefore the best thing to do is to stop your own ears and never mind what is spoken. (Charles Spurgeon)
On this day:
"Scriptures are taken from the King James Bible or those marked (GW) are from the God's Word Translation, used with permission".

On 31st December 1384, John Wycliffe died in Lutterworth, Leicestershire aged 59 years. A brilliant scholar, he is called the "Morning Star of the Reformation". Wycliffe was also an early advocate for translation of the Bible into the common language. He completed his translation directly from the Vulgate into vernacular English in the year 1382, now known as Wycliffe's Bible, the first English translation of the Bible. Following his death he was declared to be a heretic, and in 1428 his body was exhumed and burned and thrown into the River Swift. His followers said, "Now he will reach the ends of the earth".
