<Yesterday    Tomorrow>

Today God says:
 "To live is Christ; to die is gain"

He promises me:
  "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain". (Phil. 1:21)

My response to the word:
  Jesus has already prepared a place for me in heaven. That's why dying will surely be gain for me. In the meanwhile I will live in the power of Christ that is supplied to me continually through the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, prayer, worship, fellowship and faith. Throughout this day I will remember that for me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

My prayer:
  Loving Lord, your Word shows me that my life is in Christ. He makes my life worthwhile. How I praise Him for giving me abundant life in the here-and-now, and eternal life in the hereafter.

Today's scriptures:
 "He was the source of life, and that life was the life for humanity". (John 1:4 GW) "I came so that my sheep will have life and so that they will have everything they need". (John 10:10 GW) "Don't be troubled. Believe in God and believe in Me. My Father's house has many rooms. If that were not true, would I have told you that I'm going to prepare a place for you". (John 14:1-3 GW)

Quote for today:
He is no fool, who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose. (Jim Elliot)

On this day:
On 5th July 1841, Baptist minister Thomas Cook had the idea of using the newly developed railways to aid his temperance work. Born in Derbyshire he became a travelling evangelist for the Baptist church when 20. He got the local temperance board to allow him to hire a special train to haul 600 passengers from Leicester to a meeting in Loughborough. By 1845 Cook was running similar tours as a business. He negotiated a deal with the railways under which they gave him a commission for every ticket he sold. All he had to do was provide the passengers. The business really took off when Cook arranged package tours for the Great Exhibition in London that took place in 1851. For five shillings, a person could travel to the exhibition, eat and sleep in London. The tours proved a smashing success. He arranged over 165,000 tickets from Yorkshire alone. The business developed and soon became international. He died in Leicestershire in 1892 at age 83 years.
